Born to an immigrant family from Chad, Yassi J. Tamdji grew up in one of the most diverse boroughs in New York. Describing herself as a lover of travel and a seeker of opportunities, she has explored many countries including Mexico, France, Central African Republic, Chad and more recently Kenya. After graduating from Georgetown University in Washington, DC, Yassi moved to Johannesburg, South Africa where she worked and lived for almost a year. Although she currently resides in Glen Cove, Long Island her roots are in the neighbouring Queens.

Where I get my hair done:

I get my hair done at the home of a Trinidadian woman in Brooklyn. One day I saw her walking by and I loved the way her locks looked. When I found out that she styled her own hair I was sold.

Where I go to listen to live music:

I love Shrine in Harlem, it’s a multi-arts and culture venue. It was named after Fela Kuti’s Shrine in Nigeria. This is a great live music venue (especially when I am feeling nostalgic for the continent), playing a range of African beats including Reggae, Hip Hop, Fusion and Jazz.

Where I go for a great culinary experience:

The Madiba restaurant in Brooklyn is a great spot. It has a “kasi” vibe which I love, especially when I’m missing Joburg.

Where I go to chill out:

Bryant Park is a great space to escape the hustle of the city. Besides being a good spot to just chill and watch people, it is also a cool place to see outdoor concerts and activities. Queens is home to Citi Field baseball stadium, where the vibe is always great in the summertime brimming with the energy of thousands. I like going here to catch a game of baseball, grab a hotdog or a burger at the popular Shake Shack.
