#BestofTheInternets: Cecile Emeke’s ‘Fake Deep’ takes on ‘benevolent sexism’

By Vanguard Reporter

‘Fake Deep’ is a poem written and directed by Cecile Emeke on ‘benevolent sexism’ by ‘progressive patriarchs. Performed by six women, it is a beautiful ode to the ‘triple consciousness’ that black women embody as they navigate the world through their raced, gendered and classed bodies. We want to scream amen as she says, “If I hear one more poem written by a man telling women how to live their lives by policing their clothes, bodies, sexuality, make up use, reading habits, exercise regimes and cooking skills, I’m going to slap somebody..”
